How do you take care of your private parts? We explain what you should look for in intimate care and how you can protect your intimate health.
What exactly the right intimate care looks like is always a big question that leads to a lot of discussions. Sometimes countless hygiene products, creams and lotions are advertised, sometimes the focus is entirely on the effect of natural products, and sometimes it is said that one should completely do without any special articles and products. But what is true and which form of intimate care actually makes sense? This is exactly the question we will answer here.
Intimate care – what makes sense for when?
When it comes to questions about intimate care, there is not necessarily a single answer that applies in every case. As with general body care, it depends on your situation and whether you have health problems or special care needs, for example. However, there are some tips and important information that are almost always applicable or generally valid. We explain why proper intimate hygiene is so important, what it should look like and what you should look out for.
Pay attention to the balance of the vaginal flora
Proper intimate care is a challenge for many, because unlike many other parts of the body, the vulva should not simply be cared for with any soaps or other creams. The reason for this is the special flora and pH value of the genital area, which can quickly become unbalanced if the wrong care is used. So if you use shower gels or other care products that can influence the pH value, this can have unpleasant consequences. If the balance of the vaginal flora is disturbed, this can promote various diseases and infections, such as bacterial vaginosis, also known as BV, or a fungal infection. Excessive vaginal cleansing can therefore have exactly the opposite effect to what you want to achieve.
The vagina cleans itself – at least fundamentally
When it comes to intimate care for women, there is often talk of the vagina as a self-cleaning organ. But what is behind this? In fact, our intimate area has some sophisticated ways to repel and get rid of dirt and harmful bacteria. You can notice this automatic cleaning almost every day, because it manifests itself in the form of discharge, which the vagina uses to expel unwanted particles. The vagina also has a slightly acidic pH value, which is on average between 3.8 and 4.4 and ensures that various pathogens and bacteria that can lead to diseases cannot survive, or can only survive with difficulty. This is precisely why it is so important that it does not get out of balance – otherwise infections and other diseases can quickly develop in the intimate area.
Daily intimate care
Although the vagina is perfectly capable of cleaning itself, taking care of the vulva is essential. The area between the labia in particular should be cleaned daily to avoid the build-up of deposits that can harbour bacteria and other pathogens. Although the vulva is the outer part of the genital area, the wrong products can also enter the vagina from here and thus disturb the vaginal flora. For this reason, it is important that you take care of the vulva with the right cleansing products. For normal care, lukewarm water is sufficient. You can easily wash your genital area in the shower. However, make sure that you do not use any shower gel or other care products and keep them away from your intimate area as much as possible.
The right underwear and clothing
An important factor in intimate hygiene that is often underestimated is the right underwear. While lace and co. look nice, they are often not quite as comfortable for our intimate area. This is due to the materials that are used here. After all, our intimate area needs one thing above all: to be able to breathe. This is precisely why underwear made of cotton or other natural fibres is recommended for everyday wear, as they offer the intimate area this very freedom. However, too tight cuts and the wrong materials are not only unpleasant, they can also promote illnesses. If the temperature in the intimate area is not correct as a result of the wrong underwear, this also affects the pH value and thus the entire vaginal flora.
Intimate hygiene for health problems and diseases
Infections or diseases of the intimate area should not be taboo, because almost everyone with a vagina has to deal with one at some point in their life. If you have health problems in the intimate area or suffer more frequently from diseases such as bacterial vaginosis, proper cleaning and intimate care is of course a particularly important topic. If you notice itching, burning, problems with urination or other symptoms, it is always advisable to consult a doctor first. You can also use various home remedies to treat regular problems and to protect your genitals. For example, St. John’s wort oil can help to fight or prevent infections and pathogens, as it has an anti-inflammatory effect and is said to promote wound healing. Other remedies, such as coconut oil, are also said to promote intimate hygiene.

Before you decide on a care product, you should of course always make sure that you tolerate it well and, if necessary, talk to your gynaecologist about whether it makes sense to use it in your case. What your individual intimate care will look like in the end, of course, always depends on your situation and what you feel most comfortable with.
