There are some plants that have different properties that can have a positive effect on your period and that you can try to stimulate your menstruation. However, there are no natural remedies that trigger your period in a safe and proven way.

One of these plants that you can try to stimulate your period is turmeric. There is evidence to suggest that turmeric may help trigger your period through its circulation-enhancing properties and its possible influence on your oestrogen and progesterone levels.
Turmeric is not only a delicious spice in the kitchen, but a medicinal plant with many other great properties and potentials. In this article we want to tell you what else turmeric has to offer.

Turmeric to trigger your period and support you during menstruation

Turmeric can not only potentially help trigger your period, but can also be a super support for your body during your period. Turmeric belongs to the ginger family and originates from Asia. In Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine, turmeric has been used for therapeutic purposes for a very long time.

Turmeric as a natural mood booster

Due to the low hormone levels and stress on your body during your period, you may feel down, irritable or anxious and your mood may be dampened, especially during your luteal phase and menstruation. The curcumin found in turmeric can stimulate the production and release of the neurotransmitter serotonin, which can have a mood-lifting effect (1).

Turmeric for menstrual cramps

Turmeric has a strong anti-inflammatory effect. This can help to relieve cramps and menstrual pain. Many women experience digestive problems such as diarrhoea, constipation or flatulence during menstruation. Turmeric can also help relieve these gastrointestinal complaints (2).

Turmeric for endometriosis

In endometriosis, turmeric can help relieve symptoms and inflammation. Endometriosis is a gynaecological disease that affects about 10% of women and girls of childbearing age. Endometriosis causes cysts and inflammation, called endometriosis lesions, which are usually found on the ovaries, intestines or peritoneum. The tissue of the endometriosis lesions is similar to that of the endometrium, is inflammatory and is affected by the hormonal cycle (3). Through its anti-inflammatory properties, turmeric can help reduce the inflammatory endometriosis lesions and prevent the inflammation from spreading further (4). In addition, studies have shown that curcumin can help lower the body’s estrogen levels and thus inhibit the endometriosis cells from spreading (5).
Endometriosis is also often characterised by discomfort and pain in the gastrointestinal tract. .
Turmeric can help with many complaints of the gastrointestinal tract and can therefore help to alleviate the symptoms of gastrointestinal complaints caused by endometriosis (6).
